How to measure the thickness of your dreadlock:

You twist your dreadlock so it's tight. Next, take a ruler or measuring tape and measure how thick your dreadlock is. Remember to measure the part where you are considering placing the bead, due to the fact that your dreadlock may vary in thickness. So if your dreadlock is 0.8mm, find a bead with a hole size of around 0.8mm. If the dread bead hole size is too large, it will slip off your dreads over time. In general, larger beads can often be worn further up, whereas small beads can sit more towards the end of your dreads.

Another solution is to choose adjustable beads, so you can adapt them to your dreadlocks yourself. So you don't have to worry about the size of your dreadlocks when you buy pearls.

After washing your dreads, it's a good idea to change the position of your beads slightly so that the hair underneath can dry completely.
